Federal Solar Hot Water Rebate Not Means Tested Any More

As of today, the $1,000 federal solar hot water rebate does not exist any more.

However, the new rebate is even more exciting: $1,600. And it is not means tested. So far more people will receive it. Here is how you qualify:

  • Replace an electric hot water system
  • in an existing house
  • must be a principal place of residence (no holiday homes, but can be owner occupied or an investment property)

For details have a  look at the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts website.

It is part of the Energy Efficient Homes Package which also pays for roof insulation. According to the government press release, insulation saves about $200 off an energy bill. That compares to $300-$700 that solar hot water saves. You cannot get the rebate for both, but need to choose whether to get the rebate for solar hot water or for insulation.

The only drawback is that the government forms will not be available until 26 February. For our clients we’ll supply all forms completely pre-filled as soon as they are available, so that you get the rebate in the quickest possible way.
