My interest in sustainability has always been with me as though it is only natural way to operate and think. Some of the defining moments happened during the production of the BMW CleanEnergy World Tour 2002. The final event was held in Johannesburg, South Africa at the World Summit on Sustainable Development. I was blown away by the many companies that actively pursued more than profit.

When I produced the Sustainable Living Festival 2004 in Melbourne, I experienced the passion of volunteers who put in many hours to further successfully what they believe in.

The biggest blocks to sustainable living seem to be added expense and inconvenience. Individuals bear these while society as a whole is benefitting.

My vision is to find solutions that benefit the environment on a large scale AND reward the people directly. With the collaboration of the right businesses we are now able to do that.

I am grateful for the effort and dedication of all people and organisations who make SolarPay possible. And I look forward to getting one step closer to sustainability, where we live in harmony with nature and each other; and use existing market forces to achieve that.

Hugh Butler

Hugh was trained as an agriculture scientist in the 70’s, but has spent the last 20 years in introducing and commercialising new technology; working with inventors and investors (e.g. mars medipix).

Hugh recognises that there are no absolutes in science but on balance science shows that humans have severely degraded the global environment, but excitingly, humans have the creativity to do something about it.

Going green, or sustainability makes sense both scientific and financial wise. Green pays: return of investment for green is often substantial; conservation of energy using existing technology is proven. The challenge is to remove the barriers to adoption, provide un-biased information to consumers, meet their needs for change, and make it simple.

Businesses already know that green pays. Simple things work. Forget
carbon sequestration, nuclear technology, because these are complex solutions or unproven technology. Go solar water heating.

And, for good measure in 4 years time when Photovolaic systems follow Moores Law and become twice as effective, for 20% cheaper, go green with all household energy. Achieve 100% reduction in CO2 emissions from the home.

Good science, good economics.

For a majority of the past 26 years, I have been a self-employed plumber, drainer, gas fitter.

I would also classify myself as a moderate business entrepreneur where the core of my endeavours has always been quality & service.

My interest in solar hot water began two & a half years when I was employed as a sub-contractor to install the systems.

Since then, I have commenced my own operation whereby the core value of what I do is quality & service.

Like many of us today, I am more environmentally conscious & incorporate various energy wise strategies into my own home & lifestyle.

I also gain a sense of satisfaction knowing that what I do on a day-to-day basis (in my home & working life) is of benefit to the environment & the future of my children.

As a freelance writer and publicist, I only promote things I believe in. This may have cost me the big bucks I could have earned penning pushy sales letters for dodgy and unsustainable companies, but it’s great for being able to sleep at night!

I know that solar hot water is green, has low operating costs and works. I think rebates and renewable energy certificates are a wonderful thing. However, since climate change affects everybody, everybody should be able to take action to tackle it, not just those who can afford to pay now and get reimbursed later. I’ve always thought “somebody should make solar hot water available to people who can’t pay upfront”.

“Somebody” did. SolarPay makes it easy, affordable and accessible. So when I heard about it I rang Alexander and invited myself on to the team as a writer.

When I’m not thinking or talking about solar hot water, I read books (and review them for local ABC radio), watch the birds in the backyard, spend too little time cleaning and going to the gym and lots of time enjoying life with my friends and my partner.

In order to prepare your Solar Hot Water installation including organising all rebates we know we ask a lot. We need to collect a fair few details from you. Making the process as easy as possible is a great challenge.

This is the first iteration of the site. Your feedback about what does or doesn’t work would be invaluable to make this an even better tool. Help us to make solar hot water a reality for as many people as possible and hence reduce our carbon emissions.
